Royal Railway Cambodia Initiates Trial Runs on Phnom Penh-Poipet Line

PHNOM PENH, July 25, 2024 — The Royal Railway Cambodia (RRC) has commenced a series of trial runs using the Kiha 183-182 trains on the northern railway route from Phnom Penh to Poipet. This development occurred on the morning of July 24, 2024, marking a significant step towards resuming passenger services after a prolonged suspension.

The trial involved four trains, specifically the Kiha183-4559, Kiha182-7561, Kiha182-7552, and Kiha182-4558, journeying to Poipet city in Banteay Meanchey province, near the Cambodia-Thailand border. This exercise aims to assess the railway's readiness for passenger service and to acclimate potential passengers to the re-opened route.

The testing phase focuses on various technical aspects, including adjustments to the chassis system, entry and exit mechanisms, air conditioning units, and security doors. This comprehensive evaluation is crucial to ensure the highest safety standards are met before the official resumption of the service.

The northern railway passenger line had been inactive for an extended period due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although freight services have continued to operate three times per week. The upcoming official launch of passenger services on this route will mark a significant recovery milestone for regional connectivity.
